Anesthesia Overdose During Hernia Repair- Patient Dies; NY Medical Malpractice Trial Attorney Gerry Oginski Explains
Gerry's Educational Medical Malpractice Website
He was a young man who had a hernia. His doctor told him he needed to have a hernia repair at the hospital. His doctor told him it was routine procedure. His surgeon said he would be in and out the same day.
He believed his doctor. He believed the surgeon. He wanted to get rid of this hernia. He was young man with a bright future ahead of him.
He was having a hernia repair done in a well-known, well-respected hospital in New York City. What could possibly go wrong?
His surgery didn't start till late in the afternoon. The surgery went beautifully. There were no complications. Except there was a slight problem. The anesthesiologist couldn't really wake the patient up after surgery. He was extremely sleepy. He was groggy.
The Anesthesiologist gave the patient medication to reverse the effects of the anesthesia. That didn't really work too well. he was still sleepy and drowsy. This was not a normal finding.
In an attempt to make sure the patient was fine, the anesthesiologist decided to keep the patient overnight and observe him. That was an excellent choice. While in the recovery room, the patient's condition did not improve. He still remained extremely sleepy and groggy.
The hospital's definition of "watching him" simply meant they would check on him every four hours. That was not a good choice. Find out what happened when the nurses went to check on him for hours after they deposited him in his room.
